Langston Places at State 4-H Ambassador Talk
Ivan Langston, an 8th grade student at Union Christian, gave a speech entitled “Proper Poultry Care & Maintenance” which focused on poultry production of small backyard flocks, for the State 4-H Poultry Ambassador Talk. He was named the second place winner of Division II (7th-9th grade) at the state public speaking contest. The event was held April 19, at Nelson Memorial on the LSU Baton Rouge campus. According to Carol Remy, LSU AgCenter Extension Agent, he had to present a poster, give a 3 minute speech & a 500 word essay on some aspect of poultry production, food preparation/nutritive value, food safety, processing or marketing. He chose to speak on production & focus on backyard flocks because he raises chickens & is very knowledgeable about them. Currently, he has about 22 Red Sex Link & 6 Barred Rock hens. This is Ivan’s third year in the competition. In 2009 year he competed in Division I & received a blue ribbon. In 2010, he won the Division II Egg Ambassador talk. And this year, he placed second in the Division II Poultry Ambassador Talk. Ivan is the son of Marianna Langston. At UCA he is a member of the National Honor Society, and participates in basketball and track. He is a Union Parish 4-H Teen Leader & was recently named Outstanding 4-H Jr. High Boy at 4-H Achievement Day.
