Improving the Profitability of Contract Broiler Operations Source: Jason Holmes, County Agent and Regional Livestock Specialist, LSU AgCenter A series of workshops will be held in spring 2013 across north Louisiana to help improve the profitability of contract broiler operations. While contract broiler growers may not be able to control marketing decisions, improved financial management and farm productivity can result in improved profitability.
An additional objective of the workshops is to improve the financial literacy of workshop participants. As part of the workshops, a webinar will be delivered by staff of the Livestock Marketing Information Center on the situation and outlook for the poultry industry.
Workshop attendees will participate in developing production and financial benchmarks for their operations. These benchmarks will then be compared to averages for all participants and delivered to an individual following completion of all workshops.
Information needed to develop the benchmarks will come from growers' settlement sheets and farm expenses. The benchmarks and risk report mailed to workshop participants following the workshops will include discussion of ways to improve their operation's profitability. Participants are asked to bring settlement sheets and the Schedule F form from the 2012 tax year in order to complete the benchmarking.
Dates and locations for the workshops are:
Tuesday, April 23, 2013: Natchitoches Parish Farm Bureau Office (1911 South Drive, Natchitoches)
Tuesday, April 30, 2013: Louisiana Delta Community College, Ruston Campus (1010 James St., Ruston)
Wednesday, May 1, 2013: Union Parish Extension Office (210 E. Water St., Farmerville)
Workshops begin at 10:30 AM
