Spiritual Corner By: Tommy Bennett Thanks to Our Mothers!
Being a mother is such a unique position in that it is one highly favored by God and yet so lowly. At first thought you might say society has changed the role of our mom’s as many today must work outside the home in order for families to “make ends meet.” The truth is, her role hasn’t changed in the least, and it is simply much more stressful. No matter how long she is at work, awaiting her will always be the sleepless nights, tears of joy, even tears of sadness, and all the much needed comfort that she alone can give. Much of the world looks at motherhood and tries to teach our young women that becoming a wife and mother is nothing more than a stumbling block between them and success. Aside from becoming a child of God there is no higher calling! When each of us reflect on our lives and the roads we have taken, we cannot deny the fact that much of our journey has been molded by lessons we learned from our Mothers. When thinking of the true value of a mother, the great author Washington Irving said it much better than I: “A father may turn his back on his child; brothers and sisters may become inveterate enemies; husbands may desert their wives and wives their husbands. But a Mothers love endures them all; in good repute, in bad repute, in the face of the world’s condemnation, a mother still lives on, and still hopes that her child may depart from his evil ways and repent; still remember the infant smiles that once filled her bosom with rapture, the merry laugh, the joyful shout of his childhood, the open promise of his youth; and she can never be brought to think him at all unworthy.” A mother’s love is second only to God’s and one we never outgrow. Many times during a game when the camera is directed on a 300lb. NFL lineman he inevitably will say, “Hi Mom!” As I write this article I can so well remember my daughters as toddlers, and my trying to comfort them when something wasn’t right. Sometimes I was successful, but most of the time they would cry for Momma, when in reality she was only one room away. I also remember times when the distance seemed much greater; standing at graveside with friends and family as they said good-bye to their mom. In these instances her great value is seen in how much she is missed. Mom’s you are our example, friend, guide, and we thank you for everything you do for us! Thanks Mom! “Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her.” (Proverbs 31:28).
