Just Rambling, October 2014

Just Rambling:
Donnette and I enjoyed our trip to Branson, Mo. last month. If you read my September “Just Rambling” you will know that this was the trip I wasn’t suppose to make—but I did! We had a great time. It had been many years since we had been to Branson—the first ever for just Donnette and I without the kids or other friends. The weather was great and the trip up was beautiful especially in North Arkansas and around Branson as the leaves were just beginning to turn. The first show we attended was the Mickey Gilley show. I have always been a fan of Mickey Gilley and he put on a great show. Very different than I had expected. He had an accident in 2009 which almost left him paralyzed but through physical therapy, his determination and prayer he started performing again April of 2010. He moves around the stage rather slowly and he still has problems with his hands which prevents him from playing the piano but his voice remains really strong. At 78 years of age it is amazing how strong his voice is. He was born and reared in Ferriday, LA with his cousins Jerry Lee Lewis and the Reverend Jimmy Swaggert. He told the audience that Jimmy had more money than he and Jerry Lee put together then he showed a clip of a person depicting Reverend Swaggert throwing money into the air with the caption below it stating “I throw all my money up to the Lord and what he doesn’t need floats back down to me.” As I stated earlier, Mickey’s show was quite different than I expected. He told his life story through word and song. It was so very interesting and entertaining along with bringing back special memories for almost everyone in the theater. His band was excellent along with his back up singers who also assisted him with some duets. If you go to Branson I would recommend you see Mickey's show—it was very enjoyable.
Another show we attended was the musical play on the book of Jonah. Again not knowing exactly what to expect we were very impressed and entertained. The theater is relatively new and just huge. It was amazing how realistic it was presented even though it was announced before the play began that some things had been added which were not in the scriptures but were added for entertainment purposes only. Overall I felt it was very good. The main theme in the scriptures is that God spoke to Jonah—Jonah 1-2—”Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittal saying arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.” What did Jonah do? He tried to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord by way of Joppa where he boarded a ship to Tarshish however his disobedience of God’s command and his running away didn’t prove very successful. After the ship set sail for Tarshish the Lord sent out a great wind on the sea and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship was about to be broken up. Jonah 1:4—Jonah realized that this storm was due to his disobedience and that to calm the storm the ship’s crew had to throw him overboard, which they did. This action, in turn, calmed the storm. Jonah 1:17—Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. Jonah 2:1-2—Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the fish’s belly. And he said: I cried out to the Lord because of my affliction, and he answered me. Jonah 2:10—So the Lord spoke to the fish and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. Jonah 3:1-3—Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I tell you.” So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. What can we learn from this book? First we can learn that when God speaks to us we must listen and obey which Jonah didn’t do initially. God has provided us with our instructions for life through his scriptures. 2nd Tim 3:16—all scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. We also learn that we cannot run or hide from God as Jonah tried to do. Heb 4:12-13—For the Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is discerner of the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. After Jonah finally obeyed God he still didn’t believe that the people of Nineveh, who were very evil, would turn from their evil way and if they did he questioned if God should show them mercy but God did. Are we sometimes like this Do we have preconceived ideas that people who are turned to evil ways will not ever respond to God. In Acts 26:18—Jesus sends Paul to the Gentiles “To open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.” James 4:7-8—tells us to submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.
Donnette and I had a great time—we were entertained, we enjoyed each other, and we were inspired through the book of Jonah. May we all count our blessings each day and as Christians and Americans be ever thankful to God and his Son, Jesus Christ, through whom we have salvation. Van Bennett
