Just Rambling:
During the early part of June,Donnette and I along with our two granddaughters, Katy and Savanah and my daughter Velvet with her husband, Johnny traveled to the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, then to Washington DC, and to Nashville, Tennessee to the Grand Ole Opry. Johnny and Velvet did most of the driving with Donnette only filling in. I didn’t drive any but according to my granddaughter Katy, I am the best backseat driver ever. This was the first thing she told her mother, Brittany, ( Another daughter). She told her mother she knew where she got her backseat driving ability—from Paw. I just had to backseat drive Velvet and Donnette—no problem with Johnny. Ha! We enjoyed our trip very much, the hiking, the horseback riding, the food and they enjoyed the zip lines. We also enjoyed our trip to Washington DC—they were able to do a lot of touring while I attended the Farm Credit 100 year celebration activities. I have to say a BIG thank you my granddaughter, Savanah, for saving her Paw. On Friday morning as we were crossing the street in the pedestrian crossing a vehicle traveling about 50 mph ran the red light—I didn’t see the car coming but Savanah did. She caught my arm and pulled me back out of the path of the vehicle which missed me less than two feet. After leaving DC we traveled to Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington, then back to the Shenandoah National Park area. The next day we went to Nashville for the Saturday night Grand Ole Opry. After visiting Mt Vernon I thought I would include some information about George Washington and some of his quotes that I like. When you read these quotes think about today’s America—I wonder what George Washington would think and say? Van Bennett
About George Washington 2/22/1732—12/14/1799 The Father of Our Country George Washington was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, serving as the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He also presided over the convention that drafted the Constitution, which replaced the Articles of Confederation. The Constitution established the position of President of the United States, which Washington was the first to hold. Washington was elected President as the unanimous choice of the 69 electors in 1788, and he served two terms in office. He oversaw the creation of a strong, well-financed national government that maintained neutrality in the wars raging in Europe, suppressed rebellion, and won acceptance among Americans of all types. His leadership style established many forms and rituals of government that have been used since, such as using a cabinet system and delivering an inaugural address. Further, the peaceful transition from his presidency to the presidency of John Adams established a tradition that continues into the 21st century. Historically, Washington has been widely regarded as the “father of this country”. Washington was born into the provincial gentry of Colonial Virginia; his wealthy planter family owned tobacco plantations and slaves. After both his father and older brother died when he was young, Washington became personally and professionally attached to the powerful William Fairfax, who promoted his career as a surveyor and soldier. Washington quickly became a senior officer in the colonial forces during the first stages of the French and Indian War. Chosen by the Second Continental Congress in 1775 to be commander-in-chief of the Continental Army in the American Revolution, Washington managed to force the British out of Boston in 1776, but was defeated and almost captured later that year when he lost New York City,. After crossing the Delaware River in the dead of winter, he defeated the British in two battles, retook New Jersey and restored momentum to the Patriot cause.
Washington’s Quotes
“I know of no pursuit in which more real and important services can be rendered to any country than by improving its agriculture, its breed of useful animals, and other branches of a husbandman’s cares.”
“Let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.”
“If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.”
“My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her.”
“I hope I shall possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man.”
Following his brief inaugural address to the Congress, President George Washington and his party walked over to St. Paul’s Church for divine services. His prayer that afternoon was: “Almighty God, we make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government; to entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow-citizens of the United States at Large.”
In his address of 19 September 1796, given as he prepared to leave office, President George Washington spoke about the importance of morality to the country’s well-being: “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, Religion and Morality are indispensable supports …. And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion …. Can it be that Providence has not connected the permanent felicity of a Nation with its virtue?”
When it was reported to General Washington that the army was frequently indulging in swearing, he immediately sent out the order: “The general is sorry to be informed that the foolish and wicked practice of profane cursing and swearing—a vice little known heretofore in the American army—is growing into fashion. Let the men and officers reflect ‘that we can not hope for the blessings of heaven on our army if we insult it by our impiety and folly.’”
“The Constitution is the guide which I never will abandon.”
“To be prepared for war is one of the most effectual means of preserving the peace.”
“An army of asses led by a lion is better than an army of lions led by an ass.”
