Spiritual Corner:
I have to admit, since President Trump’s inauguration, I have cringed when looking on facebook. As I scroll my newsfeed, I’m met with article after article and post after post of people bashing each other. I have liberal friends calling conservatives hypocrites and calling Donald Trump basically Satan himself. I have conservative friends calling liberals whiny children and my list could go on. I, for one, am sick of it. I try to read posts from both sides because I honestly do want to be informed and seek to understand differing points of view. However, there is just so much negativity and lack of respect for each other that it is sickening. I honestly have wanted to unfriend some people or just shut down my account for a while. It just so happens that this weekend, I came across a verse while reading my Bible that stuck out to me. It seemed to relate to America’s current situation and when I read it...I almost got goosebumps. The scripture is as follows:
“Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
He lifts His voice, the earth melts.” –Psalm 46:6
Take just a minute to let that scripture sink in. When I first read it, I immediately thought of all of the chaos our country seems to be in right now. I thought of how Republicans and conservatives seem to be in uproar over the latest women’s march and over liberals’ personal attacks on them. I thought of how liberals and progressives seem to think the kingdom of America is falling because of the new president. Then I looked at the second half of the verse. “He lifts His voice, the earth melts”. Wow. Just wow. Our God can merely speak a word and this whole bickering, disrespectful, hypocritical, whining earth could melt. Into nothing. If that line doesn’t put things in perspective, I don’t know what will. All of this quarreling and hating each other is obsolete. We’re all in an uproar or thinking our country is falling to pieces, but somehow seem to forget the fact that God is sovereign and oh so powerful. A single whisper from God and our world would return to the nothingness it was molded from. I think God showed me these verses to remind me not to get caught up in things that don’t really matter. We need to focus on God and following His commandments and doing His will. We don’t need to worry about a particular political agenda or making sure our beliefs align with Republican or Democrat. We need to make sure our beliefs align with God and His holy word. The only way to do that is to dig deep into God’s word every day and to pray earnestly to God that He will reveal Himself to us more and more every day and will help us to live in the way He wishes for us to. So before you get caught up in the next political argument on facebook, pause for a moment and make sure you are where you need to be with God. Make sure you are worrying about Him, first and foremost. This country, this world, and each one of us is nothing without Him.
“But seek His kingdom, and these things will be added to you.”–Luke 12:31 --Dana Alexander
