Just Rambling May 2017

Just Rambling: Louisiana Farm Bureau Beef Tour traveled throughout Arkansas on April 5th through April 8th. A tour bus carrying over fifty cattlemen and women traveled first to Texarkana to visit the Four States Fair and Rodeo facilities. While there we visited the Four State Fairgrounds Ag Learning Center where we were met by Mr. Brent Talley, CEO and his staff for a tour and lunch. While in Texarkana we were met by Mr. Travis Justice, Commodity Director for Arkansas Farm Bureau. Mr. Justice served as our tour guide for the trip. We next traveled to the Arkansas Farm Bureau office in Little Rock where we were greeted by Mr. Randy Veach, President of Arkansas Farm Bureau and his assistant, Mr. Warren Carter. While there Mr. Veach made a presentation to the group and we were provided refreshments. After leaving Arkansas Farm Bureau headquarters we traveled to Winthrop Rockefeller Institute University of Arkansas on Pedijean Mountain. Here we had dinner and spent our first night. While there we were able to view some of their cattle. On Thursday, April 6th, we traveled to Springdale, Arkansas to tour Tyson’s Food Discovery Center. This Center is where Tyson does their research and development of new products. Next we traveled to the Pauline Whitaker Animal Science Arena at the University of Arkansas. While there we had lunch, heard a presentation from Dr. Michael Looper, head of the Animal Science Department and watched their Ranch Horse team perform. After departing the University of Arkansas, we traveled to Subiaco Abbey Farm to view their Angus cattle. We then traveled to Conway County Farm Bureau where we were fed a steak dinner, in a beautiful lake setting and were able to meet and hear from Conway county board and county president. We enjoyed very much the fellowship and meal with the Conway County Farm Bureau. Thursday night we spent in Morrilton, Arkansas. On Friday morning we headed to Big D Ranch owned by Phillip and Beth DeSalvo. Mr. and Mrs. DeSalvo had been in the poultry business until Pilgrims Pride filed bankruptcy in 2008. Along with hundreds of other growers the DeSalvo’s were out of chickens and they chose not to go back into the business. Instead they converted their poultry houses into facilities to handle their cattle operation which is made up of Registered Brangus, Ultra Black cattle and commercial cattle. The DeSalvo’s were Arkansas Farm Family of the year in 2012. This is a true family operation with their two teenage children, Ben and Isabella being very involved along with Phillip’s father, Tony. Big D Ranch has a bull and female sale each year. The dates and other information can be found
After departing Big D Ranch we traveled to Benton for a lunch of fried catfish then on to the Southwest Research and Extension Center for a tour of the work going on at this facility. Sherry Beaty provided us a tour of the forage work being done at this center and Dr. Paul Beck gave us an overview of their cattle operation. This stop was very interesting as will as educational. From the Southwest Research and Extension Center we traveled to Plyler and Son Charolais Farm. We were welcomed by Caleb and Briana Plyler along with their six year old son, Huck. I have to admit that Huck was the star of this stop. Huck was not timid and he had to show everyone his miniature polled Hereford show heifer. Huck also has a Charolais bull maned Superman which is for sale but Caleb says every time someone comes to buy a bull Huck always talks them out of buying “Superman.” The Plyler’s, just like the DeSalvo’s, are a fine young farm family and it was great to be given the opportunity to visit their farm. From the Plyer farm we traveled back to Texarkana for a steak dinner at the Silverstar Smokehouse and our final night on the trip. Saturday morning we left for Louisiana and home. My wife, Donnette and I want to thank the Louisiana Farm Bureau and all the Louisiana Farm Bureau personnel especially Mr. Ron Harrell, for another great “Beef Tour.” A special thank you to Mr. Marty Wooldridge for allowing us to meet at his home and for his work with Ron Harrell in planning this trip. This year Marty’s boss, Crystal, was not along but she and their 3 year old son, Trip, met us for the last night in Texarkana. I would like to thank the Arkansas Farm Bureau for welcoming us to Arkansas and to Mr. Travis Justice for being our tour guide. He did a great job and it was a pleasure to meet him. A big thank you goes out to all the places we visited in Arkansas. We had a wonderful trip. Arkansas is a beautiful state with great people. Thank you and God Bless.
