“How Great Thou Art”

I don’t know about you, but I don’t like problems. I don’t like drama, I don’t like conflict, I don’t like negative things happening to me or around me. Like the rest of the world however, I have my fair share of problems that I have to deal with. The thing about me is, while I profess a strong faith in God, I am a worrier. I have faith that God can take care of my problems, and yet I still stress and worry over each little issue. Just ask my husband. He has to hear me go on and on about things. The thing is, even when I’m not vocal about my problems, they are still usually there, the worries floating around my brain constantly. I’ve been working hard at trying to “Let go, and let God”, to give Him my burdens through prayer and try and keep from taking them back from Him. Yesterday evening, at Wednesday night worship, I was humbled and I felt like God was trying to get a message out to me. We were singing the song, “How Great Thou Art”. I looked over at my father, who was singing with so much raw emotion glistening in his eyes, and it was just like getting the breath knocked out of me. How can I claim to have faith in God when I doubt His ability to take care of my problems? Because when I continue to stress and worry over my problems, after I’ve been praying about them and giving them to God, that’s exactly what I’m doing. I’m doubting His ability. In that moment, singing that song, the lyrics resounded and connected with something inside of me. “How great Thou art”. Do we really, truly know how great God is? Take a second and look around. Look out your window. God’s creations are all around us. God crafted the magnificent and powerful trees, the peaceful, bubbling creek. He created the watercolor canvas we know as the sky, the waving, green grass of the fields. He created your dog, your baby, who rides with you to feed the cows or who sleeps in your bed at night. He created that herd of cattle that recognizes your voice when you feed them. He created the birds who praise Him daily with their melodious voices. He created your wife, who takes care of the house and kids and still encourages you and strengthens you daily. He created your husband, who toils all day long for you and your family, and who still gently wipes your tears away and holds you after a long day. He created those precious children and grandchildren whose pictures you have displayed everywhere and whose little voices will easily melt your heart. God created all of this. He molded this whole world out of nothing and yet, I still feel like I have to doubt His ability to take care of my problems? Jesus tells His disciples in Luke chapter 12, “Therefore, I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest? Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!” (v. 22-28). We are commanded not to worry, so to be obedient to God, we must not worry about things, but instead TRUST GOD with our burdens. Maybe you’re worried about something because you just don’t know what’s going to happen. You really don’t know what’s going on and frankly, you’re just a little scared. Rest easy, my friends. Did you know that God knows absolutely everything about you? Luke 12:7 says that “Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered”. God knows us way beyond just a personal level. He created us. He KNOWS us. He knows that I am prone to worry and stress. He knows that I’m emotional and care deeply about getting along with others and not having conflict.
He knows that I am likely to lose confidence in myself and feel guilty over not doing enough or not doing something right. God knows me, and He knows you. He knows our weaknesses and our strengths. He is more than capable of taking care of our problems. You may say, “Well, I know He is capable, but WILL he take care of our problems?” In Psalm 34:17 it says, “The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; He delivers them from all their troubles”. There is your answer. God looks at His righteous followers and He delivers them from their troubles. So now we know that God is capable of handling our problems and He is more than willing to handle our problems. What more do we need to know? Y’all, God sent His only, beloved son for us. Jesus was perfect. He was fully God and fully human, yet He never sinned. He wasn’t like any person we encounter in our world today. He was someone people were drawn to, that they wanted to be around, because He was so genuine and kind and caring. He didn’t look down on people because of what they did or didn’t have. Jesus was perfect. And because of us, He died the most heinous, horrifying death imaginable on a cross. He was called obscene names and spit on. I can’t imagine spitting on even my worst enemy, let alone my Savior, but because of our sin, that’s exactly what we did. Jesus was beaten, whipped across his bare back. He had a crown of thorns placed on His head to cause physical pain and emotional pain as people mocked Him. He had nails hammered through his hands and feet while He was still alive and He had to suffer that pain, hanging on the cross in front of people who hated Him. Through all of this He still managed to ask God to forgive us. He pleaded, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do”. How He was ever able to do what He did for us, I will never fully understand. However, He did it. And while Jesus suffered on the cross, God also turned His back on Him—for us. Those of you who have children, can you imagine hearing your child cry out to you and you turn your back on them? God turned His back on His son because of us. Because HE LOVES US. Oh, how He loves us. I don’t know what each of you may be dealing with today or what trials you are facing. I do hope, though, that you will read this article and it will let you know this one thing: God loves you and He is faithful. If you are His child and are obedient to Him, He will deliver you from whatever you are facing. Please stop worrying. Show this lost and dying world how incredible your God is by living your life with a faith that doesn’t doubt. If we, as Christians, doubt what our Father can and will do for us, then why would those who are lost ever trust in Him? God will take care of you. Trust Him, believe Him, give Him your burdens, and be the Light He wants you to be for this world.
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” --Matthew 5:14 Dana Alexander
