Spiritual Corner October 2017 :

Spiritual Corner: “Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, ‘Sit here while I go over there and pray.’ He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, ‘My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.’ Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, ‘My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.’ Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. ‘Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?’ he asked Peter. ‘Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.’ Matthew 26:36-41 The above scripture is pretty convicting. Jesus takes his disciples with him to Gethsemane. He knows what will happen soon, but his disciples do not. Jesus is in anguish and is crying out to his LORD. He longs for his disciples to be there with him and for them to pray. Unfortunately, Jesus comes back from his deep prayers and finds his disciples sleeping. What a disappointment that must have been to him! Sometimes, I feel like we probably think…”How could the disciples do that? How could they fall asleep waiting for Jesus?!” However, if we stop to take a look at our own lives, I’m positive we’ll discover that, sadly, we do the same thing to Jesus at times.

Okay, time for a quick self-evaluation. How often do we come home after school or work and immediately dig into our Bibles? What about when we say our prayers—is there anyone who accidentally falls asleep when saying their prayers at night? Are there some people who get in the habit of only praying before meals? Has our Bible reading become sporadic? Or are we trying to squeeze our Bible reading and prayer time into whatever measly minutes we have left at the end of a long and hectic day? Let me tell y’all that I am or have been guilty of all of these! I’m not proud to admit it, but the blunt truth is that all of these things show that Jesus is catching me sleeping when He’s asked so much more of me. If I’m not using my time wisely to glorify Him through all of my activities and if I’m not devoting time every day to Bible study and prayer, then I’m disappointing Jesus. God created each and every one of us with such special talents and characteristics and He wants us to showcase those abilities in a way that glorifies Him. But how are we supposed to know what glorifies our God if we don’t study His word to get to know Him?
The more time and energy we devote to building our relationship with Jesus, the more we will get to know Him and know His desires for our lives. Jesus has left all of us great responsibility. We are responsible for winning souls for His kingdom. We will never reach the souls that we need to if we do not wake up and spend our time wisely pursuing Jesus with all we have. Don’t let Jesus catch you sleeping. When you stop and think about it, everything else can wait. We often feel like our time with God is the easiest item to move on our agenda, but really, it’s the most important and should be our number one priority. Live your life boldly for Jesus, spread His word courageously, and maybe skip that last load of laundry in favor for some extra time in the Good Book. When it’s time for Jesus to call you home, don’t let Him find you sleeping. Dana Alexander
