1st Annual Union Cattlemen’s Association—Cattleman of the Year was recently presented to Mr. John Van Bennett of Spearsville by the Union Cattlemen’s Association president, Ms. Rachel Dean. Mr. Bennett was selected from a pool of candidates based on years membership, conservation and environmental stewardship, use of technology, support of youth programs, and promotion of the beef cattle industry. Mr. Bennett is one of the founding members of the Union Cattlemen’s Association and served as their president for nearly 25 years. He is a member of numerous other local and state agricultural associations and boards, many of which he has chaired. Mr. Bennett is also a past winner of the Outstanding Service to Agriculture Award by the Union Parish Chamber of Commerce and the Distinguished Service to Agriculture in North Louisiana by the North Louisiana Agri-Business Council. In February 2007 he and his wife, Donnette, began a monthly publication serving the agricultural community that now has over one-thousand subscribers and is distributed in at least five states. The Union Cattlemen’s Association members and board of directors would like to again congratulate Mr. Bennett, and thank the sponsors of this year’s Cattlemen of the Year Award: Ag Trader, USA, Marion State Bank, Origin Bank, Southern Ag Credit, and Union Parish Farm Bureau.
