Just Rambling September 2018:

Just Rambling, September 2018: Recently I saw a post on Face book by a man referring to his teenage years when he was attending high school. He stated that in those days all the older high school boys that drove a truck to school always had a gun rack in the truck with a shotgun or rifle in it. He went on to say that he even got into a fight with another boy and they both had guns in their gun racks but neither of them even thought about shooting one another. This post really caught my attention because after I got old enough to drive to high school, I always had a gun in my truck’s gun rack. As he said, all the boys did and there wasn’t a thought or instance of shooting one another or a group of people. This was unheard of. What has happened? One thing—kids don’t have to work as we did when I grew up and even when I raised my children I put them all to work in poultry houses, in the hay field, working cattle, planting grass, etc.—not just my son but my five daughters as well. They also had chores with their show animals, the garden and inside the home. Discipline was also used in our home which included corporal punishment from both me and my wife. In Proverbs 13:24 it states, “He who spares the rod hates his son. But he who loves him disciplines him promptly.” This type of discipline has pretty much gone out of use this day in time—time out has come into existence or no discipline at all—just let the kids run wild. Have we really thought about this scripture—it says we hate the child if we spare the rod and don’t discipline he or she. This lack of discipline doesn’t teach respect, it does just the opposite. It allows children to grow up with very little respect for themselves, for authority or for their fellow man hence the problems we see today. Also as I grew up and as my children grew up we always attended church on a regular schedule and continue to do so. In Hebrew 10:24-25 we are told—”And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works. Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.” As I reflect back on my childhood and teenage years I can remember practically every spanking or whipping that I got from my Father and my teachers. Neither the teachers or my Father spared the rod when I needed it and I am so thankful they didn’t. I have told several people that I would probably have grown up to be a heathen if I hadn’t received the discipline that I did. If they had put me in time out I would just have sit in the corner thinking up something else to get into. My Mother never spanked me—she always turned it over to my Father but her insistence was that I always respect my elders by saying “No sir, Yes Sir, No Ma’am, Yes Ma’am, Please and Thank You. She drilled this into me. She always insisted that I open the door for ladies which I have always tried to do. As I write this I think of a comment I saw one time when a young man opened the door for a lady. She immediately turned around and told him to never do that again. He said his Mother had always told him to open the door for a lady but he guessed he was mistaken this time. I tell this comment because this part of the problem today, attitudes have changed and respectful actions are often ridiculed. In today’s world in America we have people who reject discipline of children both at home and in school. Apparently they think children can rear themselves without any direction which is totally false. We have people who absolutely feel that all guns should be taken away from the American people. How stupid can they get. Take guns away from law abiding citizens and they are at the mercy of the criminals. We also have many in our nation today that want to take God out of our nation. When I hear this I always think of this quote from President Ronald Reagan—”If we ever forget that we’re one nation under God then we will be a nation gone under.” Let us never forget God’s Word and may we practice good discipline in our homes and schools with all children. IF we raise our children to be disciplined, they will become respectful adults and hopefully these senseless and evil shooting will stop. Let us never give up our Second Amendment rights to own firearms. We must strive to do these things to preserve our nation as a free nation. Van Bennett
