Where to go in New Orleans Last month in the Ag Trader, and informed by the book, 111 Places in New Orleans That You Must Not Miss, I wrote about two sites that I had recently visited in New Orleans: Angelo Brocato’s ice cream shop and the chainsaw Tree. This month, however, I have chosen one very different place to discuss: the Cornstalk Hotel. This place represents an interesting and unusual New Orleans attraction that is well worth a visit during your next trip to the Big Easy. The Cornstalk Hotel is a fascinating property in the heart of the French Quarter. Built in the early 1800s as the home of Judge Francis Xavier-Martin, first chief justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court, the building is now a small bed-and-breakfast that caters to tourists. The name of the hotel comes from its distinctive outdoor fence with its wrought-iron posts shaped to resemble a row of corn. Legend has it that a couple from Iowa purchased the hotel and set up the cornstalk fence as a reminder of home. While this story may or may not be true, it certainly has captured the imagination of tourists and locals alike, and the Cornstalk Hotel remains a crowd favorite. Elvis Presley once stayed there (during the filming of King Creole ), as have Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin , and several recent presidents. Finally, to top it off, the hotel is also supposed to be haunted. It has become well-known for its “polterazzi,” ghosts that take photos of guests as they are sleeping. Many guests tell tales of staying alone in a room, only to wake up the next morning to find photos of themselves on their cameras and cell phones apparently taken during the night. The photos always appear to have been taken from the ceiling, which adds another twist to this strange story. Needless to say, the Cornstalk Hotel is at least worth a visit, if not an overnight stay. If you go, take a look at the fence and the chandeliers in the bedroom, and then sit on the porch and enjoy a meal while watching people walk down Royal Street and into the French Quarter.
