Suggs Named Cattle Producer Of The Year

Suggs Named Cattle Producer Of The Year
The Claiborne Parish Cattlemen’s Association met for their quarterly meeting on Thursday, December 13th at the Claiborne Electric Meeting Room. A steak dinner was served courtesy of Gibsland Bank and Trust of Homer and the Cattlemen’s Board recognized their Cattle Producer of the Year for 2018. The producer of the year is chosen by the Claiborne Parish Cattlemen’s Association Board based on the following factors: how the nominee has promoted the beef industry and the Claiborne Cattlemen’s Association, how much effort and emphasis the nominee has placed on conservation and good stewardship of the land they utilize, how much the nominee has worked to promote and support youth livestock activities, and to what extent the nominee has utilized technology or technological innovations to improve their operation. This year’s cattle Producer of the Year was awarded to Mr. Danny and Mrs. Pam Suggs.
Mr. Suggs purchased his first cattle herd in 1973 and has raised many different breeds of cattle since then. Mr. Danny and Mrs. Pam have seen good and bad years in the cattle business but have maintained a positive outlook and have exhibited a commitment to agriculture, the Claiborne Cattlemen’s Association, and Claiborne Parish as a whole. Mr. Suggs has worked for many years with the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service helping farmers, ranchers, and landowners implement better practices to conserve the land and become more productive. Mrs. Suggs serves the community as Director of the Claiborne Parish Library. Together they operate Suggs Farm located near Lisbon.
The Claiborne Cattlemen’s Association meets quarterly for a meal and discussion of current topics related to beef cattle and hay production in Claiborne Parish. All producers, business owners, or interested community members are encouraged to attend and join. For more information on the Cattlemen’s Association, please contact Lee Faulk at the LSU AgCenter Hill Farm Research Station, 318-927-2578.
