Spiritual Corner: Simple Obedience

Spiritual Corner: Simple Obedience
“And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. And he said, take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him”. –Genesis 22: 1-3
We have a difficult time with disobedience in our world today. The students I teach, the players I coach, they all have one thing in common—most of them don’t always like to obey my commands the first time I give them. Even as adults, we do the same thing. Instead of simply obeying, we often try to find the quickest and easiest way to get the same result. I’m still guilty of not always obeying my parents right when they tell me something and I’m 27 years old! Goodness—what is wrong with all of us that we can’t simply obey? Then, of course, sometimes we obey, but not without an argument, a groan, or a question of “Why?”. We can’t simply obey! We do this with God, too, don’t we? God tells us not to be anxious, but to instead pray about things and yet…we stress out and worry and try to fix things ourselves. God tells us not to do certain things and we constantly question him with “But why not?”. God commands us to love the people that we don’t even like and we insist on knowing the bigger picture behind why we need to love this person instead of just simply OBEYING GOD. The passage above tells the beginning of a story about Abraham. God commands Abraham to take his son, Isaac, and sacrifice him. This would be difficult no matter what, but it’s probably especially difficult for Abraham because he had waited a long time for Isaac to be born. God had promised Isaac to him and now he was taking him away? How must Abraham have felt? But you know what…Abraham doesn’t reveal his feelings to us at all. He simply obeyed God. In fact, he didn’t even question God…not ONCE! I find that to be amazing. God was telling Abraham to kill his son and Abraham simply obeys. No fight, no struggle, no cries or screams, no resistance whatsoever. He simply obeys. Abraham loved Isaac, but he loved God even more. Also, he trusted God fully, completely, 100%, with all that he had. He didn’t have to know why God was telling him to do this. He didn’t have to be able to see the end result. He simply obeyed. He wasn’t indignant or insistent that God wasn’t being fair at taking his son away—he realized that God gave him Isaac to begin with and that He had every right to take him away if he so desired. Abraham showed a powerful, strong faith in his God and simply obeyed. How many of us can say that we do that in our life? Do we simply obey God? I know that I so often don’t. I was convicted whenever I read this passage, but also inspired. Abraham was just a human. If he could have that simple obedience to God, why can’t I? It all starts with knowing God and becoming God’s child. We must use simple obedience and obey the Gospel. We must look to the scriptures to see what God tells us to do to obey the Gospel. Obviously, we are not saving ourselves. We are being obedient to God’s commands and He is being faithful to us and performing a work in us, just like in the story of Naaman in 2nd Kings, chapter 5. God healed Naaman of leprosy whenever he dipped 7 times in the Jordan. Obviously, Naaman didn’t save himself by dipping in the Jordan 7 times. The power of God did through Naaman’s obedience. Because, make no mistake, if Naaman had instead dipped 7 times in the Damascus River, his leprosy would not have been cleansed. Why not? Because he would not have been obedient to what God told him to do. If you’re not a child of God, you need to dig into the scriptures and read about the Gospel and determine what it is God is telling you to do to become His. If you are already one of God’s children, then you need to strive to be more like Abraham. We all do. We need to strive to live our lives in simple obedience to God and watch His power envelope our broken world. --Dana Alexander
