Spiritual Corner: Resting in God

Spiritual Corner: Resting in God Anyone involved in the field of agriculture understands the busyness of life. I feel like rest is usually the last thing on anyone’s mind. Growing up, our animals were priority. Daddy had us waking up at 4:30 on week day mornings to help in the chicken houses before we came home, showered, and went to school. In the evenings, even after late basketball practices, our job was to feed and take care of our show calves, horses, and other animals. Daddy was always busy, from working at his day job as a loan officer to managing the farm. Mama, although a stay-at-home mom, literally never seemed to stop working and taking care of the house, the animals, us, and our dad. Rest was something that, although everyone wanted it, just didn’t always seem to be attained. There were more important things that needed doing. I feel like most of us can relate to this. Regardless of what your career is, life is busy and there are always so many things that need to be done. We stretch ourselves to take care of the house, the animals, our spouse, our kids. We look out for friends, work at our day job, get a workout in. We manage our finances, manage our meals, and the list goes on. All of these things are indeed important, but sometimes I think we neglect how important the concept of rest really is. In Genesis 2:2 the Bible reads, “And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made”. God had just spent the last six days creating the world and the things in it, but on the seventh day, the Bible makes a point of showing that God rested. We need to think about that. God is God. He is magnificent, all-seeing, all-knowing, powerful, capable of things no one can even imagine. Do you think our God, a God so incredible really NEEDED to rest? I kind of doubt it. However, He DID rest and He wanted us to know that He did. Perhaps, He was modeling to His children an act that was important that He wanted us to realize was important. If the God of our universe took the time to rest amongst His work, doesn’t it seem obvious that we should too? Now don’t misunderstand me, I think there I a difference between true rest and laziness. I don’t believe that God is wanting us to be lazy or neglect our jobs or our family duties. However, I do believe that He wants us to experience true rest—true rest being in Him. When we go to sleep at night, it helps to rejuvenate us for the next day. We can’t run on an empty tank for days or even weeks and expect to be giving everyone else our best. We must take the time to rest at times to help make us the best we can be for ourselves and others. In Psalm 46:10 it says, “Be still and know that I am God”. I think one of our biggest mistakes sometimes is not simply taking the time to “be still” during our busy lives. If we are going at 100 mph each day, how are we ever going to obey that last scripture. Notice that it doesn’t say, “please be still” or “if you have time, be still”. It is a command to BE STILL. Not only does God want us to take time to rest from the craziness of life for our physical needs, but more importantly, I believe He wants us to rest and be still to meet our spiritual needs. It’s hard for your spiritual life to grow and your relationship with God to develop if you’re constantly on the go. Think about it. When are the moments that you feel closest to God? Maybe it’s during the midst of your work when you intentionally take a moment to be still and notice God’s creation, such as when feeding cows. We need to take the time to quiet our minds, still our busy hands, and simply be still. We need to spend time resting in God’s Word and in prayer to Him. During those times, we may feel like we’re wasting time that we could be getting things done, but friends, that time with God is the most important time. We can’t pour into others without first filling ourselves up with God. For as it says in Mark 8:36, “What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul”? When we spend that time with God, we are able to give Him our burdens (Matthew 11:28-30) and lay down some of our load. We are also able to meditate on the promises of His Word, which strengthen us and prepare us for our busy days. Rest may seem to be something that can easily be omitted from our to-do list, but it is truly essential to the betterment of our lives, others lives, and our souls. Life is hard, life is busy, and we need rest. I believe God created us to yearn for that rest. He modeled this rest to us and He yearns for us to be still for a moment during our busy and productive day and turn to Him, so He can pour into us and fill us back up so we can go out and live lives that bring Him glory. --Dana Alexander
