Claiborne Parish Cattlemen recognize Cattle Producer of the Year and 4-H Youth

Claiborne Parish Cattlemen recognize Cattle Producer of the Year and 4-H Youth
The Claiborne Parish Cattlemen’s Association met for their quarterly meeting on Tuesday, December 5th at the Claiborne Electric Meeting Room. A steak dinner was served courtesy of Goldman Equipment and the cattlemen’s board recognized their Cattle Producer of the Year for 2017. The producer of the year is chosen by the Claiborne Parish Cattlemen’s Association Board based on the following factors: how the nominee has promoted the beef industry and the Claiborne Cattlemen’s Association, how much effort and emphasis the nominee has placed on conservation and good stewardship of the land they utilize, how much the nominee has worked to promote and support youth livestock activities, and what extent the nominee has utilized technology or technological innovations to improve their operation. This year’s cattle Producer of the Year was awarded to Mr. Gary Kim Grigg. Kim has been in the cattle business most of his life and raises registered Brangus as well as commercial cattle near Athens.
The Claiborne Cattlemen’s Board also recognized member Austin McCurry for completing the Master Cattleman Course this past spring. The Master Cattleman Course is a ten-week educational program focused on beef cattle management. Austin completed the course in Natchitoches.
Also recognized at this meeting were the Claiborne Parish 4-H youth who showed beef cattle projects at the 2017 Claiborne Parish Fair. The 4-H’ers recognized include: Trace Morrow, Daisy Verdin, Daryn Scriber, and Brook Ovitt. The Claiborne Cattlemen’s Association meets quarterly for a meal and discussion of current topics related to beef cattle and hay production in Claiborne Parish. For more information on the Cattlemen’s Association, please contact Lee Faulk at the LSU AgCenter Claiborne Parish Extension Office, 318-927-3110.
