Just Rambling
To begin my “Just Rambling”, I would like to extend a big “thank you” to Hollis Seafood Buffet for the fundraiser dinner they provided for my daughter, Velvet, and her husband, Johnny on October 15th. The food for this dinner was totally provided and donated by the ownership of Hollis Seafood Buffet, the Calvin Hollis family. The event was planned to last from 5 to 8 pm on the night of October 15th, but after feeding well over one thousand people, they ran out of food at just past 7 pm. I would also like to thank all the volunteers that helped in the kitchen and with the serving. If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit Hollis’ Seafood Buffet, I would encourage you to make plans to try it out. You will thoroughly enjoy it and, even though it is located in downtown Spearsville, there are no traffic problems. Please see their ad on page 4.
The weekend of December 1st was a big weekend for part of my family — it was the St. Jude run, which my daughter, Dana, and her husband, Randy, had been collecting donations for. They each committed to raise $600, as well as committed to run the St. Jude Half Marathon which is 13.1 miles. We left on Friday, November 30th to stay in Memphis that night so Dana and Randy would be ready to run early the next morning. Donnette and I went along for moral support, but ended up walking almost a 5K walk trying to see them on different street crossings. I was amazed at the amount of people in Memphis and the number of runners. There were 26,000 runners in all 4 of the races and, according to the figure I saw, they raised 9.5 million dollars. While there, Dana and Randy met Jheramy Smith, a neighbor from Union Parish, that was running the full marathon — 26.2 miles. My daughter, Brittany, had made them all running shirts in memory of Velvet and Jheramy had a sign on his back showing in memory of Velvet. He and Velvet had shown cattle together when they were teenagers. All three, Dana, Randy, and Jheramy, completed their runs and we were very proud of each of them helping out the children of St. Jude. Thank you to those who donated funds to each of these runners.
I would like to say Merry Christmas to each of you and your families. Enjoy your families and tell each one of them how much you love them, because we never know when someone may leave the family, as in the case of my daughter, Velvet. We look forward to Christmas because of the love of family and friends, but the main reason is to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Let us never forget this, and may we never forget the death of Jesus Christ on the cruel cross of Calvary, so that we, through Him, have the hope of eternal life.
Hebrews 13:20-21 “Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen”
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Van Bennett
